"What day is it tomorrow?  Is it December?

Is it Thursday of Friday?  I can't remember."

Our middle boy, Jamie begs to be told,

As I turn up the heating, because it's so cold.

"I want to go first,"  "No, me, it must be me,"

Son number one speaks after son number three.

For the important question after the date

Is followed by bickering and much debate,

As to who will open that first little window

On the big chocolate calendar picturing Frodo

Of the Lord of the Rings, the best thing alive

To adorn this year's countdown to day twenty-five.

We toss a coin and still much remorse

Who'll open the last big one of course!

The matter is settled and we open the first,

A chocolate bell behind a flap already burst.

Day number two is an angel with wings

Day number three a chorister that sings

But on day number four (having fought over the door),

The chocolate is uneaten, having gone on the floor.

Oh dear, not yet day number five

And already I strive

To see fair play heeded

And judge where needed.

Day number six, peace is restored,

Perhaps they've all become bored?

It's a Christmas pudding with short piece of holly

Poking out of the top to look a bit jolly.

Days seven, eight, nine pass by just fine

With barely a cry of "It's mine, mine, mine!"

Day number ten yields a half melted goblin.

Not very seasonal but certainly Tolkein.

I get to open day number eleven,

With picture of moon, stars and heaven.

Day number twelve is a chunky toy drum,

Just a bit boring, but still yum, yum.

Lucky thirteen is a replica Santa

Followed by reindeer set for a canter

Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eight.

We get a robin perched on a gate.

Nineteen, twenty, excitement mounts -

Only five days to go, as if patience counts.

Day twenty-one is the three wise kings.

Are we back to the characters from Lord of the Rings?

Twenty-two is a stocking full of toys,

Just the ticket to tease our boys.

Day twenty-three, well I have to laugh.

It's a chocolate cow with a chocolate calf,

Stood close together admiring the scene,

Tails half raised, as if they've just been...

Day twenty-four - almost the last door!

All three boys are begging for more.

At last it's the big day, and they've almost forgotten

There's one last chocolate to be gotten.

It's the full monty...

A crib with new baby and adoring donkey.

It's the biggest choc yet and just to be fair,

Dad chomps the lot - the big greedy bear!
