About Sophie Snell

Sophie Snell lives in Quarndon, Derbyshire.  She has a Masters degree in Mediaeval History from St Andrews University, qualified as a Chartered Accountant (“there aren’t many jobs specialising in Mediaeval History!”), and speaks fluent French and German.  Sophie is married to Rob, a performance engineer in the aerospace industry.  They have 3 young boys.

After a high flying career working as a management consultant, Mergers & Acquisitions executive and then International Finance Director, she gave up work (and the travelling!) after the birth of her first child in 1999.  3 years later and with a second baby, she returned to work part-time.  For 4 years she was the member-nominated Non Executive Director of the Derbyshire Building Society.  A third boy was born to Sophie and Robert in 2003 and Sophie currently works from home as a writer and artist.

“With an academic as a father, and an English teacher for a mother, I grew up surrounded by books.  It gave me a deep fascination for all things creative.  Libraries and our huge upstairs hall which was lined floor to ceiling with books, were my playground.  Dad had the most amazing selection of books – from all the great classic novels, to lyrical poetry and literary criticism.  I remember browsing a huge ancient 30-volume encyclopaedia and gazing at the beautiful panes of coloured glass depicting the nine muses that lit the upstairs hall of our Victorian flat.

“I was quickly hooked on novels, plays, narrative poems, short stories and paintings  - which tell their own story.  I have vivid memories of my Dad reading a very hammed up Paradise Lost as my bedtime story.  A rollicking good storyline and sharply drawn characters always drove me on.  Even when I struggled to read close type or was intimidated by an 800 page tome.

“Writing for me is an irresistible urge – if I’m not sat at my keyboard, I’m restless and distracted!  There have been times in my life, when family and work responsibilities have taken over, and I was unable to write at any length.  But instinct always drives me back to the keyboard.  After much encouragement from my family (and our growing boys), I have now given myself the space and time to focus on writing.”

It’s long overdue!

Most of all I love to see people enjoying stories - whether reading books, listening to tales or creating their own.  Bringing the tale alive with voice, movement and humour, watching children giggling and entranced, is a magical life and I relish every moment of it!”
